A Brief History

During 2023 Fan GRRRL co-founders, Dani and Jess, joined forces to challenge stereotypes and celebrate the rich history of fan girls. Our story began at work as university lecturers at BIMM University, where we discovered a shared love for various interests; Disney, Twilight, Kardashians and all things Emo. However, our true connection formed when we realized the struggle of finding a space where we could openly express our fandom without facing judgment and stereotyping.

In the summer of 2023, Dani stumbled upon a podcast featuring Josh from You Me At Six, discussing the band's desire to shed the "band for girls" label and be perceived as a serious and professional entity. This sparked a realization: why are female fans not taken as seriously as their male counterparts? This moment became the catalyst for The Fan GRRRLS Revolution.

Since then, we have embarked on a mission to unearth the fascinating history of fan girls and shed light on the cultural power they possess, despite being consistently exploited and misrepresented. Through intensive research, we have delved into the nuances of fan girl experiences, exploring the reasons behind their cultural impact.

The Fan GRRRLS initiative goes beyond mere exploration. We began to our findings to curate educational workshops that delve into the intersection of fan girl culture, feminism, and the music industry. By sharing our knowledge and insights, we aim to challenge the sexist stigmas surrounding fan girls and empower them to embrace their passions without fear of judgment.

As we continue our journey, Fan GRRRLS is committed to releasing academic work on various fan girl subjects, contributing to a broader understanding of the significance and influence of fan girls in popular culture. Join us on this exciting and empowering adventure, and together, let's challenge stereotypes and champion the voices of fan girls everywhere. Stay tuned for updates and opportunities to be a part of the Fan GRRRLS movement!
